Championship points.—City 64, Palmerston 63, Old Boys 35, United 34, High School 22, Kia Toa 20. - '■ ; Five cricketers of the year.—This is an innovation in these reports. The five cricketers arc selected, not because they are the- best • cricketers in. Palmerston North, but because of the cricket they played in relation to their own previous performances and their own previous known standards. The five cricketers of the year, on this occasion and in the opinion of the statistician, are: —T. L. Pritchard : For his fine bowling in club, Hawke Cup and Plunket Shield matches. (He was awarded the Winsor Cup by the New Zealand Cricket Council, as the best bowler in New Zealand). W. 11. Allan: For his batting in club cricket, C. MeVicar: For his innings iti the Hawke Cup challenge match against Waikato. S. McVicar: For his batting in club and representative cricket. A. Carlisle: For, his batting in club cricket,, and particularly for his fine innings against Palmerston in the second round. The championship was won by the City Club and this is the first time since the last war that any club with tho exception of Palmerston, Old Boys and High School lias won - the senior championship. It is the first win in tho history of the City Club, and their performance will give rise to a much keener competition in future seasons. The highlight of the season was the bowling of T. R. Pritchard, who took 93 wickets. This is a record number for local cricket. One fact is obvious. The standard of cricket in Palmerston North is slowly dropping, and its decline is being hastened by the fact that quite a number of senior A players do not take the game as seriously as they could. It should be impressed upon all clubs that senior A cricket is serious cricket, and not a means by which individual players can amuse themselves on Saturday ' afternoons.
One more point; the statistician suyo, is that- the season’s play was hampered by weather conditions, etc., so that it was necessary (o play well into April to tin ish Lhe competition." This would not lie the ease if certain Saturdays were set aside for certain matches, and, if it rallied on those certain Saturdays, those days constituted a day’s play. This moans that a certain programme would have to be drawn up for the season, allowing for Saturdays oil' for ITawke . Cup matches, etc., and fixing the days for the various club matches.
