Dr C. E. Becbv (Director of Education) lias been appointed a member of the Teachers’ Superannuation Board. Mr G. Wilton, of Cuba Street, his friends will be glad to learn, is again improving in health after a setback he suffered recently through an attack of pneumonia. Colonel 1. T. Standish, C.M.G., D. 5.0., retired list, has been reappointed to the active list and attached to the Adjutant-General’s branch, Army Headquarters'. Sir Francis Frazer and Mr G. A. Duncan have been reappointed members of the Executive Commission of Agriculture. Sir Francis has also been reappointed deputy-chairman of the commission. Sergeant J. B, Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, is at present on sick leave and undergoing medical treatment. It will depend on how lie responds whether lie will be able to serve with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas. If he is not fit for active service abroad, he hopes to be allowed to serve within New Zealand. At the jubilee celebrations of the Masonic Grand Lodge of New Zealand, at Christchurch, it was announced that the Grand Master of New Zealand had been pleased to confer the rank of Past Grand ' Deacon, honoris causa, upon the Past Masters of several lodges. These include Wellington- Wor. Bros. A. G. It. Blackwood, P.G.S. (Mangahao, 231), Thos. Rowell, P.G.S. (Tutanekai, 156), W. H. Melhuish, P.G.S. (Bister, 62), A. Macgregor, P.G.S. (Waihenga, 150). Iluapeliu: Wor. Bros. W. E. Bullard (To Awaliou, 133), W, A. Watt (Ruapehu, 128, and Rangatira, 71). Captain W. E. Parry, C. 8., lt.N., of H.M.S. Achilles, has been appointed to the rank of Commodore Second Class as first naval member of the New Zealand Naval Board, Chief oi the Naval Staff, and Commodore Commanding New Zealand Squadron, while continuing in command of H.M.S. Achilles, to date May 1, 1940. In making this announcement yesterday, the Minister of Defence (Hon. 1*- Jones) said that Commodore Horan had relinquished the rank of commodore, but was continuing in command of H.M.S. Leander in the rank of captain. This change has become necessary because H.M.S. Leander is now employed upon service which prevents Commodore Horan carrying out’ the duties of Chief of the Naval Staff and Commodore commanding the squadron. The death occurred recently of Mr H. B. Cooper, of Mako Mako Road, Levin. Mr Cooper, who was in his 81st year, was born in Stockton, Surrey, and arrived at Lyttelton with his parents in 1864 in the ship Canterbury. He spent his early life in Lyttelton and eventually came to the North Island, taking lip land at Pahiatua in the early ’eighties with his brother, the late Mr It. Cooper. On leaving Pahiatua he followed fanning pursuits at Mnhunoa East. Oliau, for some-time, subsequently joining the staff of the Horowlienua County Council. Mr .Cooper lived in Levin for about 30 years and is survived by his widow, six sons—Messrs W; It. and T. F. Cooper (Wellington), J. P. Cooper (Lower Hutt). G. and J. H. Cooper (Levin) and H. B. Cooper (Auckland! —-and two daughters—Mrs H. Arnold (Lower Hutt) and Miss A. Cooper (Levin).
