FARMING NEWS.

RURAL R A KINGS. Trade in Live-stock. The past season was ono of the smallest for deliveries of live-stock from Gisborne to other districts for many yeans. Sheep were considerably less than half that of thr'o years ago, although the reduction on 193839 was only small. The number of cattle involved was less than half that of' two years ago and about 49 per cent, fewer than 1938-39. Wool Values. Ithns been explained by an authority that the reason why values for lambs’ wool have not been so satisfactory this season .is because of the war-time arrangements made between England and Franco. In previous years France has always boon a big buyer of lambs’ wool, but under the arrangements made since the outbreak of war, Britain has been buying in New Zealand on behalf of France, thus removing much of the competition for this class of wool. Royal Show Entries. A comparison of entries at Royal Shows during the last 14 years, contained in the annual report of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, discloses that the 1938 fixture, held in Hamilton, eclipsed all previous records. The entries totalled 3089, and the next best was 3018 for ihc 1936 show in Christ church. At the Hamilton show there were 929 entries in cattle classes, which was the highest for the period under review". The CTiristchuieh show of 1936 holds the record for sheep classes. In that year entries totalled 1237. Growing of Tomatoes, At a meeting of the Napier Horticultural Society recently, a large tomato was exihibited, it being stated that it had been grown from a lateral, which had been taken from the parent plant and grown by itself. By this ipethod it was possible to 1 obtain a regular" supply of tomatoes for, ias the older vines eeasod to bear, the .younger plants grown from laterals produced their fruit.
