Herbert, J.P.’s, Vivian Henry George AVirk, alias Butler, alias • Cheosman, pleading guilty to two charges of theft at Pahiatua, was sentenced to three months’ hard labour on each charge, the terms to be cumulative. A decision to take steps to form a calf pool or pools in the Pahiatua and Eketahuna districts was made by 20 votes to 13 at a meeting of farmers at Pahiatua, on Tuesday, to discuss matters affecting the industry. Mr P. Davies, who presided, said the meeting was convened to give fanners an opportunity of understanding thoroughly the objects and operation of the pool. A canvass of the district had been moderately successful, but was apparently handicapped by misunderstandings, one of which was to the effect that the pool was run by one of the collecting agencies or by the Marketing Division. This was not so, and it would be the farmers’ own pool, conducted by their own committee. Mr J. G. Brechin, National Dairy Coun cil representative, read a communication from the Wairarapa Calf Pool, which, it was stated, had been running since 1929 with every satisfaction. An average payment of 8s 4.7 d per exportable calf had been received in the previous season foi 18,649 calves . Dealing with the control of the pool Mr Brechin said it was similar to the cooperative dairy movement. The names of the 75 per cent, in favour of the scheme, and the names of the committee elected at a public meeting would be sent to the Minister ' of Marketing (Mr Nash), together with the area defined, with a repost to form a pool. The area included the suppliers of the Rongokokako, Kaiparoro, Eketahuna, Nireaha, Hukanui, Hamua, Newman, Konini, Roxdale, Pahiatua, Mangatainoka, Tararaua, Mangahao, and North Tiraumea. dairy factories. “One almost guarantee the carriers service under the pool,” said Mr Borthwick. “They would be in a better position and would appreciate it.” Mr Corski explained the successful tenderer for the ■ calves had to accept the carriers appointed by the committee. Quoting from the Dairy Board Report for 1938, Mr C. Iff. Brown pointed out the increased receipts to farmers under the pool system. In the non-pool areas for that year, he said, farmers received an average of 6s 5d per head. In areas under pools they received 7s 2d. Mr G.' F. Iffoggard gave figures from the Pig Marketing Association in 1939, showing an average price for pools of 7s sd' per head. The Woodville average was 7s 5.4 d, and Ashhurst 8s 0.5 d. The motion for the formation of a pool being carried, Mr Davies appealed to those who were opposed to it to give the pool a trial for one year. CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS.
