ADDINGTON SALE. A STRONG TONE. Per Press Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, May 1. The Addington _ market to-day was strong in the sections for fat sheep, fat lambs, and prime fat cattle. Fat sheep of good quality showed an increase of from 2s to 2s 6d a head. A good yarding of fat cattle sold at prices which were dearer than last week by Is 6d a 1001 b. About 2000 more store sheep than usual were entered. The sale was a shade weaker, except for the best, sound-mouth-ed sorts. With, an over-supply of old ewes, this class, was inclined to ease as the sale progressed. Outstanding English Leicester-Romney ewe lambs sold at 23s sd, with good rape sorts at 18s Id to 20s; and average lambs at lis 6d to 15s 6d, with rough sorts at 6s. One of the best sales of two-tooths was the 19s 3d paid for a truck lot. Other pens of better-class two-tooths, fine woolled, sold at 17s 6d. A station line of 250 sound-mouthed ewes sold at from 13s 6d tq 14s. The fat lamb sale, on the increased export schedule, of 9d a pound for 361 b.. lambs or under, was the best for some time. Exporters forced, the pace, and butchers had difficulty in filling their requirements. Butchers' sorts sold at an advance on the schedule rates, and exporters paid a shade more in some cases. The penning of fat sheep was slightly smaller than usual. comprising 5000 head. The quality of the animals, however, was the best for some Prime, heavy wethers forward from the Chatham Islands, fattened locally, and Romneycross ' Chatham wethers of show standard brought up to 39s Id. The average price for a truck-lot of 56 wethers was 355. The market opened at a sharp advance on the recent rates, with good ewes 2s 6d a head better, medium to good wethers at about the same and heavy wethers Is 6d to 2s better. Exporters paid up to the advanco in the export schedule. Altogether, there was a buoyant marketBest wethers made 32s to 395, good 27s to 395, ordinary sorts 23s to 265; and prime ewes, 25s to 295; ordinary 15s to 20s, freezing to 16s. • The fat cattle entry was of overflow proportions—62B head. There was a better display of finished cattle. The price improvement continued, to-doy's prices for the- better sorts being up to 15s better than last week's. There was little change in the values for medium and rough sorts. Prime steers made £ls to £l9. with light to medium sorts at £8 15s to £ll. Good beef made from 36s to 38s 6d, with the tops going to 40s a 1001 b., medium from 32s to 355. and rough, down to 275. .■■',•', There was an easier sale for porkers, values ranging from 41s 6d to 47s 6d—an average price a lb of 7d to 7id. JOIINSONVE.LE MARKET. The few pens of prime heavyweight bullocks forward at the sale at Johnsonville yesterday met with good competition, though prices showed little alteration on those of-last week. Medium and lightweight cattle were easier by 5s a head; extra prime heifers were 5s a head firmer than last week, selling readily; and med-ium-weight cows met with no alteration. The wethers comprised chiefly heavyweights, with a few pens of light and unfinished sorts. Extra, prime heavyweight wethers met with a ready sale, prices bein" slightly firmer on those ruling last week. There was no alteration for the light and medium-weight sorts. Extra prime heavyweight ewes were firm on last work's prices, though medium-weights and plain were slightly easier. All c.asses of lambs met with a steady sale. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report an average varding of sheep and a full yarding of cattle of all classes at their fortnightly Ashhurst sale.
