SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

WEST END SCHOOL. The West End School Committee met last evening, Mr G. Tremaine presiding. Others present were Messrs J. H. Dalziel, R. I. Hands, W. Collins, A. 15 Pcnfold, A. W. Just, E. R. Humphries. N. H. Hume, H. M. Rough (sec-retary-treasurer) and the headmaster (Mr A. W. Jackson). _ A. welcome to Mr Humphries, a new member of the committee, was extended by the chairman. The headmaster reported that the roll number was 486 and the average attendance over the last four weeks was 444. The health of the children was good arid the roll number was steadily increasing. In 1939 the year began with a roll number of 417 and closed with 472. The present year opened with 461 and had now reached 486. With reference to the committee’s request for cycle ■accommodation at the school, Mr E. R. Hodge, architect to the Wanganui Education Board, wrote stating that all the board’s workmen were in the Main Trank area on essential school building works and none could be freed for at least four weela-r Another obstacle was that the board was not permitted to obtain sufficient iron to cover the building as the controlling authority regarded a cycle shed as something which could be deferred during the acute shortage of roof covering. If it was possible to secure a local builder or carpenter who could do the job lie would be glad to make arrangements for this. Regarding the committee’s request for improved heating at the school, the Education Board advised that the matter had been referred to the board’s architect for • a report. The matter would receive consideration at the next board meeting on May 15. After a brief discussion it was decided not to make any concessions to members of the Services attending school dances. The chairman expressed the opinion that with free admission for soldiers and Air Forge men the dances would soon lie besieged and there would be no room for anyone else. He considered no concessions should be made regarding admission charges until 11 p.m., and other members agreed. ' HOKOWHITU SCHOOL. At a meeting of the ' Hokowhitu School Committee, last evening, Mr H. W. Cox presided. Others present were Messrs G. A. Melville, H. D. Ayson, H. Lock, W. J. Rickard and P. E. Crowther (secretary). The resignation of the headmaster, Mr A. H. . McLean, who has been appointed headmaster of the College Street School, was received with regret. In tendering his resignation Mr McLean expressed his deep appreciation of the courtesy and helpful cooperation extended to him during his term at-the school.
