PETROL FOR FARMERS.
NO HOLIDAY ALLOWANCE. Suggestions that an allowance of petrol be made to farmers for their holidays, brought forward recently by the Manawatu provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union were sent to the Government in the form of a remit from a meeting of the New Zealand executive of the union. The remit asked that in view of the re-imposi-tion of the petrol restrictions the Government should make an extra allowance of petrol to .farmers to enable them to enjoy their annual holidays which are usually taken during the winter-period. . The Minister of Transport in a reply states: “I appreciate your point that many farmers can only take a holiday during the winter months and would like to be able to do something for them. I am afraid, however, that the necessity for conserving petrol as a vital war measure is, as you will no doubt readily realise, of ‘the utmost importance at the present time, and I am afraid that it is not possible to make additional supplies of petrol available for the farmers’ holidays.”
