CITY SILVER BAND.
■MEMBEK EAIIEWELLED. At the ordinary practice of the City Silver Band at tlic week-end the opportunity was afforded of conveying Best wishes to Bandsman H. Booker, who is going into camp. The conductor (Capt. E. AV. G. -McLeod) relerred to the distinct loss the band would suffer by Mr Booker’s departure, especially at a time when they were feeling the effects of other losses from the ranks, lie spoke of the Jong years of faithful service given in the capacity of bandsman, and held him up as an example for the young players to emulate. The hope was expressed that, at the close of hostilities, Mr Booker would bo able to return to his accustomed place. Deputy Bandmaster Cosgrove spoke of his long association with the departing bandsman. Mr Booker, thanked the bandsmen for their £ood wishes. He had spoilt many happy hours in their company, and trusted they would carry on. He referred to his experiences of the “ups and downs” of bands, and spoke of occasions when the ranks of a band he had belonged to were reduced to a much greater extent than those of the City Band at the present time, and still they weathered the storm. He urged the players to work hard and take full advantage of the chance now afforded of obtaining a sound musical education, theoretical and practical, an opportunity which many of the older players did not have. He wished them and the conductor every success in their efforts. Mr Booker leaves for camp this week.
