RIVER BOARD’S WORK. RATES UNCHANGED. Estimates for the year were considered and approved at a meeting of the Palmerston North River Board to-day. Those present were Trustees A. E. Alunsford (chairman), J. 'l'. J. Heatley, W. R. Hoperoft, J. Batehclar, W. Anderson and J. Hodgens, ALE. Tile total estimate of receipts is for £3935 15s Cd, compared with £3OIO last year. Estimated receipts are made up as follow:—Credit balance at April 1* 1940 (£1034 3s Bd. less creditors, £66 13s 9d). £967 9s lid; rates, A class 21-32 d, £464 16s lOd ; B class. 13-32 d, £406 ss; C. class 9.32 d, £1992 3s 9d; total, £2863 os 7d; iess estimated outstanding rates at March 31. 1941 £190; plus arrears naid to March 31, 1940, £lB0 —£2853 5s 7d: royalties, £100; refund of petrol tax, £ls; total, £3935 15s 6d. Estimated payments arc as follow; New groyi.e work: Petersen’s foreshore, 1 groyne, concrete, 6 spans, length 138 ft, £855 12s, 1 groyne, concrete, 4 spans, length 92ft, £570 8s; Esplanade, 1 groyne, concrete. 4 spans, length 92ft. ' £570 8s; Durden’s, 1 grovno extension, concrete, 1 span, length 23ft, . £142 12s; Fitzroy Channel, 1 groyne extension, ironbark piles, concrete booms, 2 spans, length 46(t, £187; less ironbark piles and concrete booms in stock, £lB7 10s; total, £2138 10s. General maintenance ol works, £1362 8s Sd : contingencies, £300; balance, £l2l. IGs'lOd. Mr Hodgens said he had grave doubts about doing any work at Petersen’s foreshore at the end ol Albert Street. Tt might affect the city interests lower down. Mr E. Fisher, advisory engineer, said that far from weakening the city’s work, the proposed work would strengthen it. The groynes would make this part less steep, thus reducing the liahilitv oil the eitv side very much. A resolution striking the rates according to the estimates was carried, the rates being the'same as last year in the three areas.
