AMERICAN RELIEF.
SUBSTANTIAL ASSISTANCE. QUEEN ELIZABETH’S INTEREST. (British Official Wireless.) Received April 27, 12.25 p.m. RUGBT, April 26. The Queen to-day visited the London depot lor American gifts to Britain for civilian relief. Among the valuable equipment which American generosity has enabled to be purchased arc four complete X-ray installations which cost about £IO,OOO each. Her Majesty evinced special interest in a quantity of lumbciqjck shirts and fleece-lined leather coats. A cablegram from the American Women’s Voluntary Services was shown which requested that these be sent to the B.E.F. in Norway. The Queen also saw packing cases sent by the “Bundles to Britain Societv,” which specialises in comforts for the British Navy and Mercantile Marine. A pamphlet which the society has circularised reads: “S.O.S.—There are 20,000 British seamen fighting for civilisation. What are you going to do to helo them ?” The total funds received to the end of March from the American public towards relief in the war-stricken areds of Europe amounted to nearlv 6,000,000 dollars of which about 4,00Qj000 has already been spent in various countries.
