Alajor G. C. Tryon, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, who was raised to the peerage early this month, has taken the title of Lord Tryon of Dur nford.
The death occurred suddenly last night of Mr J. S. Brigham, who was town clerk for Auckland for 14 years until his retirement in 1936. He was G 8 years of age.—Press Association. Sir Nairne Sandeman, M.P., who has been the Conservative member for Middleton and Prestwick for 17 years, collapsed in the House of Commons and died later in hospital, states a British Official Wireless message. Mr Toyokichi Fukuma, formerly Consul-General for Japan at Buenos Aires, has arrived at Wellington to take up his position as Consul-General for Japan in New Zealand in succession to Mr K. Gunji, who was transferred to Honolulu. A British Official Wireless message savs the King has approved the appointments of Mr Robert Howe as Minister at Riga (Latvia), Mr Thomas Preston as Minister at Ivovno (Lithuania), and Mr Wilfred Galliennei as Minister at Tallinn (Esthonia). Pilot-Officer E. W. Barnett, who is now a flving instructor stationed at New Plymouth, visited Palmerston North yesterday to preside at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Young Farmers’ Clubs’ District Committee, last night. He was congratulated by those present on offering his services to the Government. . Mr N. R. Mclsaac, chief postmaster of Dunedin, is at, present on his annual leave which he is spending in the North island. Accompanied by Mrs Mclsaac, lie has been visiting New Plymouth and the Wanganui district and tliev are in Palmerston North for the week-end. They leave for Namier on Monday and return south next Saturday.
Constables E. J. Hay (Christchurch), J. H. Deimehy (Auckland) and A. E. Kearton (Weliington) have been promo ted to the rank of sergeant, and Detectives McWhirter (Gisborne), E. Compton (Wellington, formerly of Palmerston North), and Kearney (Ha-w-era) to detective-sergeant. Detective McWhirter goes to Rotorua and Detective Kearney to Auckland.—Press Association.
Advice that Mr F. E. Sherwood was res.going from the position of district secretary of the Wellington council was received at the annual meeting, last evening, of the Manawatu \ouiig Farmers’ dubs’ District Committee. Appreciation was expressed ol Mr 'Sherwood’s services to the movement, and a. motion of thanks was carried by acclamation. A letter of appreciation will also be sent to him. Advice has oeen received by Mr H. P. Lawry, G.M., and Mrs Lawry, of Palmerston North, that . their -son, Pilot-Officer Ronald Owen Lawry, is reported missing as the result of air operations on April 24. Since the outbreak of war Pilot-Officer Lawry, who is 20 years of age, lias been engaged in the lloval Air Force activities over the North Sea area, and was in the aeroplane which found the German ship Altmarck, this leading to the rescue of the British prisoners by H.M.S. Cossack. Their many friends will hope that Mr and Mrs Lawry will, soon receive reassuring news of their son. Several members of Masonic Lodges in Palmerston North and the surrounding districts are now visiting Christchurch or proceeding there to attend the Masonic Grand Lodge jubilee celebrations.
