HIGHWAY SAFETY

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 24. The establishment of a mobile unit for the disseminating of road safety publicity is proposed by the Government Transport Department in a report to the Road Safety Council. The unit would lie equipped with a projector for screening 16 m.m. sound films and wRh driver-testing equipment. it would be used with the help of Automobile Associations and local bodies in special local road safety efforts at agricultural shows and 'industrial fairs. Educational material would he distributed and films publicly screened.

The setting-up of schools for Violators ol the traffic code is proposed in a report to be presented by the Transport Department to the Road Safety Council at its meeting. Persons convicted of offences against the regulations would he required to attend a course of instruction, the nature and length of which would depend upon the type of offence. Lectures would be given on road accidents, their causes and results, on the obligations of road users, on traffic regulations and on safe driving practices. Use would !>e made of road safety films and to illustrate reaction, time and vision and disabilities special apparatus would be utilised. This would be of value both for diagnosing defects and in educating drivers in the psychological factors involved in safe driving.
