BUNNYTHORPE
(From Our Own Correspondent.; BUNNYTHORPE, April 26. Among the many wreaths placed on the War Monument on Anzac Day was one from the local school and the ' Women’s Institute. Poppies sold in Bunnythorpo amounted to £7 Bs. On Tuesday evening, in the hall, the patriotic committee held a gala for the soldiers’ comforts fund, when the hall was packed. A special item was a tug-of-war lick! by the Young Farmers’ Clubs, there being 14 teams. Thanks arc duo to Mr A. J. Galpin (controller of the events), Mr 11. Hobson (judge) and Mr Cl. Wiggins (timekeeper). The results were: Kairanga beat Apiti B, Wliakarongo beat Ilaleombc, Apili A beat Rongotea A. Pohangina and Bunnythorpo B a draw (in an exti'a pull Bunnytliorpo won), Dannevirkc beat Waituua, Bunnythorpo A beat Waituna B, Rongotea B beat Colyton. Second round : Wliakarongo beat Ivairanga A, Bunnytliorpc A beat Dunnovirke, Apiti A beat Bunnytliorpe B, Rongotea B a bye. Third round: Apiti beat Wliakarongo, Bunnythorpo A beat Rongotea B. Final: Apiti won. Mr K. W. Barnett, Dominion president of the Ifoung Farmers’ Clubs, who presented the prizes, impressed oil the farmers the need to give of their best in the war effort. Mr C. M. McKay, captain of the Apiti team, responded. Thanks wore accorded Messrs Galpin, Robson and Wiggins. Many other competitions were held and numerous gifts of produce made. Dancing and musical items took place and in every way the gathering was a success, _ over £BO being raised. Mrs A. il. Faulkner, as secretary, was largely responsible for the smooth running of the gathering. Mr D. llcggie. chairman of the committee, thanked all for the response to the appeal. Mr 0.
