RE BOBBY CALF TRADE.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—“l don’t know why the Farmers’ Union should bo dragged into this,” said the president at a meeting reported last week when discussing the bobby ealf pools. The S.P.C.A. has to say that the Farmers' Union dragged themselves in. All the S.P.C.A. did was to ask the Farmers’ Union ‘‘if you could move in the matter of getting better conditions for these beasts” — vide letter of January 10. and cited a few proven examples of cruelty which they wrongfully stated were inaccurate. They restated on the 20th inst. that 90 per cent, of the Fpilding district calves were killed in Feilding, i.e., “referring to the Feilding pool,” when we know there is no such thing as a “Feilding pool.” This >vas also in the face of the letter of the Freezing Workers’ Union of the 19th inst.
Why. sir, did the Farmers’ Union go into committee if it was no concern of theirs and they knew nothing about it ? Have they something to hide? The trade springs from The farmers; surely it is their concern that their product get 6 a fair deal? Are the members of the Farmers’ Union aware that the secretary of the Farmers’ Union is also the secretary of one of the calf pools ? Will the Farmers’ Union kindly state the names of the secretaries of the various pools? The S.P.C.A. inspector is not a layman as regards stock, having had a life experience amongst all classes of stock. With full responsibility lie asserts that the general handling of bobby calves last season was shocking and a disgrace to any civilised country.—Yours, etc., E. M. WRIGHT, Hon. Secretary, Feilding S.P.C.A.
