OHAKEA
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OHAKEA. April 26. There was a poor attendance at the biennial meeting of householders. Mr K. Vile was elected to preside. The report was read by Mr Vile and adopted. It stated that because of likely future developments the committee had not proceeded with any permanent improvements, and this accounted for the increased credit balance at the bank. The school reports had been good and a special word of praise was given for the beautiful grounds about the school. Various sports activities had been encouraged and a large percentage of the pupil** could now swim, many having gained certificates. An appeal was made for still greater support and interest in the Calf Club and plot competitions. Regret was expressed at the resignation of Mrs Mansell from the staff. Mr Vile also gave a full resume of the committee's activities. The balancesheets for the past two years were read and adopted and a supplementary statement was presented by the. secretary (Mr IT. Kllory). The financial year ended with a balance of £IOO 16s, which had since been reduced to £B3. The election of the committee resulted: Messrs K. Vile, IT. Ellorv, IT. A. Bartlett and L. Kobcrstcin (reelected) and Air J. Ellery. There was a long discussion on the awarding of prizes to all pupils. ‘‘This practice has been discontinued for some years.” said Mr Vile in bringing up the matter, “and the school library has been built: up with the funds made available, but some parent* felr that an injustice lias been caused the pupil*.” Mr IT. Ellery spoke in favour of the provision of still better library facilities in place of prizes. Mr Bartlett was also in favour of a continuation of the present procedure. Mr Loot was against any reduction in library expenditure and reminded those present that such modern aids a* a film-strip projector and motion picture projector would be required in 1 lie next few years, and all funds would be required for these. Ho mentioned that on a vote of the children a majority of five to one was in favour of the school library. Mr J. Ellery expressed regret that those who had criticised the step taken were not present to ditsrus* the matter. It was finally agreed that, under the circumstances, no action could he taken. Mr Vile expressed his keen desire to sec adopted as soon as possible any visual aids that wore available. At a subsequent mooting of the new committee Mr K. Vile was re-elected chairman and Mr IT.
