EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 27, 1910. Joseph Powelka, who had escaped from prison and had caused a great amount of anxiety among Palmerston North residents and had later been captured, had appeared in the "Wellington Magistrate’s Court and had been remanded to appear in Palmerston North. A number of cases were pending against the prisoner, including the murder of Sergeant Maguire. A report from London stated that the liner Wakefield had failed to find any trace of the Waratah in Crozet Island or the adjacent islands. The Daily Mail (London) had offered £lo,ooo'for the first flight between London and Manchester in 24 hours. M. Paulham was preparing for the flight.
