IN WESTERN THEATRE.
FRENCH RECONNAISSANCES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, April 23. This evening's French official communique states: "Two patrol encounters to the east of the Moselle turned to our advantage. "During the night of April 22 23 our aircraft made many long-distance reconnaissance, penetrating to many hundred kilometres over enemy territory. Thev flew over the Prague region. Toward the evening of April 23 an enemy reconnaissance aircraft was brought down within our territory." There has been heavy artillery fire on the Western Front. Communications were shelled behind the Allied lines, and this brought the French guns into action for several hours. General Gamelin has decreed that a French soldier or airman who is mentioned five times in dispatches for bravery in action can be classed as "ace." states a Press Association message from Paris. The Western Front nicht communique from Paris states: "A party of sharpshooters in the Vosges routed an enemy detachment which laid an ambush near an outpost."
