EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 20, 1-910. Recause they had furnished false income returns to the Land and Income lax Department, three men wore charged in the ■ Christchurch Magistiatc s Court. The Magistrate fined each man £IOO and each was ordered to pay treble the amount of tax of which payment had been evaded. Many tributes were being paid to tbe late Mark Twain, whose death had been reported, stated a cablegram from New York. Mr J. A. Nasli had been returned unopposed as Mayor of Palmerston North for a third term.
