PETROL IN AUSTRALIA.
POSSIBLE 50 PER CENT CUT. CANBERRA, April 22. Opening a conference of petrol and motoring interests to consider the best method of restricting petrol _ consumption as a moans of conserving dollar exchange, the Prime Minister (Mr R. C Menzies) suggested that Australia might have to cut its petrol purchases at least 50 per cent. . He pointed out that on the basis of the present transaction with nonsterlin" countries Australia’s adverse balance of £23.000,000 in the present fiscal year would be increased to over £27,000,000 in 1940-41.
