MAORI BATTALION.
FAREAVELL FUNCTION. The members of. the 28th Maori Battalion, who are going overseas with the Second Echelon, will be tendered a public farewell on Saturday afternoon at the band rotunda in the Square. The speakers will be the Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser), the Minister of Defence (Hon. F. Jones), the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford), the member for the district (Mr J. Hodgens), the M.P. for AVestern Maori (Mr H. T. Itatana), the chairman of the Ivairanga County Council (Mr AV. R. Ilopcroft), the president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr B. J. Jacobs) and Sir Apirana Ngata. The Trentham Military Band will also be in attendance. If the day is wet the event will be held at the Showgrounds. Five Territorial units will also bo parading at the function. They are the Manawatu Mounted Rifles, AVellington-AA’est Coast Regiment, Field Ambulance, and the High School and Technical School cadets.
The band from Trentham military camp is to come to Palmerston North on Friday to take part in the farewell to the. Maori Battalion, and on Friday, evening is to give a display of the Retreat ceremony in the Square.
