$ EARLY MAN AAV AT G SETTLERS. Among those who attended the unveiling of tire Centennial memorial on Alt. Stewart, on Saturday, were .two of the original settlers of the Sandon district, Airs T. \ 7 errv, of Palmerston North, aged 91. and Air J. H. Gibbs, Ma.rton, aged 87. Altogether five of the original settlers are still living, but the other three were unable to attend the_ ceremony, and sent apologies for their absence. They are Mrs J. Trisk, of Sanson, aged 84; Airs AV. Frecklington, of Ohakea, aged 84; and Airs G. Shonroek, aged 89. Another guest at the ceremony was Air Maurice Hale, of Palmerston North, who celebrated his ninety-third birthday in January last. In 1871, the year in which the Sandon district was surveyed, Air Hale rode from the Hutt to Sandon to investigate the prospects of the new settlement. Thoroughly satisfied with the prospects, Air Hale rode back to the Hutt and strongly advised his step-father, Air AVilliam Scarrow, to take up land at Sandon, which lie ultimately did. Air Hqle has been in New Zealand 92 years:
