At, tl»o sndn.l nflcrnoon heM to celebrate (he eighth birthday of the Women’s Institute, Mrs Jlaytliorne presided and extended a special welcome to the mcnibcrs of sister institutes and Mrs Collins (Rongo(ea) an executive member of the Marinwatu ’ Federation. Mrs Ilaythorne had kindly made beautiful posies to present to each grandmother present, and the recipients were Mrs .T. Oke (great-erand-mother), Mesdamea M. Bennett, W ilson, Montgomerie, Simpson, Rowlands, Font!. O’Farrell, Chapman and Thompson. Thanks was expressed on behalf of the grandmothers by Mrs Bond. Ihose who gave items adder! much to the pleasure ot the afternoon: Miss Merle ( ac * companied by Miss IMaeOallum). Miss <=en (Makino), Miss Short (Makino), Miss D. Goodman, and .Mrs W. Ward (accompanied by Mrs Johnston). A brief talk was given by Mrs M. Bennett of her Msifc to the Institute for the Blind, Auckland. The points prizes for the past year were presented to the following: Flowers, Mrs Nicholson (donated Miss Pearce) 1, Mrs Ilaythorne 2, Mrs Oko and Miss Mact.nllum 3; needlework -and cooking,' Mrs Nicholson 1. Mrs Port 2, Mrs Henderson 3 Mrs Oke (the oldest member) was lulled cn to cut the first slice of the birthday cake, Mrs Collins cutting the remainder. Mrs'ilaythorne was presented with a posy and Mrs Cole and Mrs Redmayne. retiring secretary and treasurer, respectively, shoulder sprays. On behalf of the Manawatu and Oroua. Federations also the Rongotea Institute, Mrs Collins extended congratulations and good wishes; Mrs Simpson expressed greetings on behalf of the Makino Institute, and also Mrs Short (president of the Oroua Federation), while Mrs Poananga spoke on behalf of the ICa» what a Maori Women’s Institute, and Mrs L). Johnston on behalf of To Arakura. The competitions were judged by Mrs Collins and'Mrs Simpson, and resulted as follow: Flowers, Mrs Oke 1, Mrs Bond 2, Mrs MacCallum 3 ; vegetable, Mrs Bond 1, Mrs Brownlie 2, Mrs Thompson 3. A novel competition <was won by Miss Pearce and Mrs Russell. It was also announced thatMiss Pearce had consented to be treasurer.
