ESTIMATES APPROVED

STREET WARNING SYSTEM. FIRE BOARD’S MEETING. Estimates for the new financial year were approved at the annual meeting of the i'almerston North hire Board yesterday, at which there were present Messrs A. E. Mansford (chairman), V. M. Edgar, A. Grigor and E. A. Hutton. The estimated expenditure is £9512 4a lOd, which is £250 less than for the previous year. Uf the total, lire insurance companies will find £4450, the I’almerston North City Council a similar amount, and the Government £IOO. the balance coming from rents. The estimates make provision for the installation’ of warning systems, by means of lights and sirens, at the following corners: —Andrew Young and Main Streets, Rangitikei and Featherston Streets, and ltangitikei and Cuba Streets. They also provide for an extension of the fire alarm system to the State housing block at West End and for the placing of £SOO in the capital expenditure fund contribution. The. last year ended with a credit balance of £544 9s 4d. Mr Mansford was re-elected chairman. The report of the superintendent (Mr P. A. Milverton) said that the earlier extension of the fire alarm system had been completed and adjusted in such a way that further extensions could be carried out without undue interference with the present layout. Forty-five new alarm boxes had been installed, making a total of 103. The report suggested that provision be made for at least six extra alarm boxes dining the present year, also an extension of one circuit to cover the new State housing block. The electrical department of the City Council bad estimated that the cost of installing three warn ing lights in the business area.would bo £IOS. Sirens would probably have to be imported at a cost of £8 cadi. The report gave details of the buildings and plant. The building inspector of the City Council advised that be had inspected certain boarding-houses to which attention had ben drawn by Mrs Siddells, a member of the board, and life had found that their fire escape facilities complied with tile regulations. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Prime -Minister (R.t. Hon. M. J. Savage). . It was also decided to congratulate Hon. P. Fraser on being elevated to the office of Prime Minister.
