CONFLICTS AT NARVIK
BITTER STREET FIGHTING BRITISH GAIN SOLID HOLD (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received April 18, 9 a.m. LONDON, April 17. According to a British United Press special correspondent -dn the Swedish-Norivegian frontier, bitter street fighting is occurring between the British and German troops at Narvik. The British have gained a solid foothold in the lower part . of the town and the Germans are falling back, but about iIOO troops are holding out at the railway station and w'est of the town. The official German News Agency lias revived the claims that Narvik is in German hands. It says British warships again bombarded the port and town last night, but did not attempt to land troops.
MOPPING-UP PROCESS. The German Press continues to minimise tho importance of Narvik and seems to be preparing the public tor the announcement that the town has tallen. The absence of any official British statement confirming the claim that Narvik has been retaken might indicate that the Allies are well-established but arc mopping up the Germans before announcing its capture.
