PACIFIST TEACHER.
BOARD’S DISCUSSION. WELLINGTON, April IS. The participation of teachers in anti-conscription and pacifist organisations was considered at yesterday’s meeting of the AVcllington Education Board, when members debated what attitude should be taken regarding a teacher under " its jurisdiction whose name appeared in a recent newspaper advertisement as chairman of a public meeting under the combined auspices o f the Christian Pacifist Society and the Peace Pledge Union. In committee the previous night the board had decided to take no action, and by a majority of seven votes to five it confirmed this decision in open meeting yesterday. A later amendment hv Air H. Duckworth, stating that the hoard viewed with grave concern the attitude toward war taken by certain teachers, one action of which was shown in the advertisement of the meeting referred to, and asking that the Education Department define its attitude on the matter, was defeated bv nine votes to three. The chairman (Air AV. A r .‘ Dyer) said this teacher had chaired a pacifist meeting on a Sunday night. This was outside school hours, and therefore not within the board’s jurisdiction.
