EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 18, 1910. Joseph Powelka had been captured in a hay loft at Asldiurst after lie had escaped from the Wellington gaol two weeks previously. There were many charges pending against the fugitive. From Madrid it was reported that King Edward had motored to Vera (Spain) and selected the site for a monument to the officers of the Rifle Brigade who were killed in 1813 while keeping the bridge against Marshal Soult. A Hereford bullock owned by the Levin Meat Company,. which had taken first prize at the Levin A. and P. Association’s Show, had been killed and turned the scales to 11071 b. Yet another fire had occurred in Pal- ! merston North, a 10-roomed house in j Ruahine Street being destroyed.
