NOTES.

That the autumn weather in Woodvillo has been particularly mild is shown by the fact that an amateur gardener in McLean Street had rips strawberries in his garden. Ripe strawberries growing out of doors at this time of the year is a most unusual occurrence and can only be attributed to unseasonable conditions. The plants, in this instance of the Captain Cook variety, were set at about this time last year and realised a good crop during the normal season. Some Woodville residents have also noticed jonquils and other spring flowers making an unexpected appearaneee in their gardens. Discussing conditions governing the Gosling Stars bowling competition, the donor (Mr Gosling, Dannevirke) points out that the object of stipulating ilia; the challengers should consist of three junior players and one senior (skip) was to assist inter-club competition amongst the younger players. Jh the past this object had been achieved, but this season there had been discussion as to what were the qualifications of a junior, for it had hapenned that players with only a few years’ experience had frequently beaten men in a higher grade. Mr Gosling said he realised the weakness in the rules and it was now being suggested that at least three of the members in the rink should be players who had not belonged to any club for more than two years. The town clerk (Mr D. S. L. Keay) states that the value of building permits issued in the borough during the year ended March 31, 1910, was £6864 15s. Reference to poppy sales in Woodville was made by the president (Mr G. Wicks) at last night's annual meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. This year the association had ordered 800 poppies—200 more - than last year. Sales to date had realised £3O 12s 9d, so that last year’s record collection of £3O 4s had been passed and it was likely that the full quota of poppies would bo disposed of before the selling campaign concluded.
