RED CROSS SOCIETY. A meeting of the general committee of the Woodvillo Red Grogs Society was held, on Monday, a hen the Mayor . (Mr It. .Lt. Johnston) presided and there were present: Mes dailies H P. Horne, Nixon, N. B. Burnett, J. T. Horne, E. Niehobnn, It. lt. Johnston, W. Galbraith, L. Hurley, Rev. B. P, Williams, and the secretary (Mrs A. James). A letter was received from the provincial joint committee of. the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society stating that this committee had recently been termed on instructions from headquarters in order to take charge throughout the Hawke’s Bay district of the forthcoming Rod Cross appeal tor tile provision of comforts for sick and wounded soldiers and prisoners of war. The appeal would be launched by an address by Lady Galway. The provincial committee had equal representation from the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society and the Woodvillo committee was requested to immediately consider prospects lor the initial list ol donations, so that immediately instructions were received from headquarters tho appeal could be prosecuted without delay. The chairman said it was necessary that Woodvillo should do its part iu connection with the effort, lie suggested the conducting of a Paddy’s market in aid of the appeal. Mr Williams said he thought that, as so many personal appeals for contributions had been made of late, the idea of a Paddy’s market was perhaps the most suitable method ol approach Mrs Johnston suggested organising a shop to be run for, say, a week, but members were inclined to favoui a big one-day effort being made, lt was de cided that a Paddy's market he held on the last Saturday in May Endeavours arc to lie made to get the Dannevirke High School Boys’ Pipe Band to attend the function. 'J he provincial organiser (Miss King) forwarded £lO as Woodville’s quota ot Die fund raised for the relief ol Finnish refugee children. It was explained that the money was to be used lor the purchase of material lrom which to make clothing for children aged eight to ten years. It was resolved on Mrs IT, P. Horae’s suggestion that the committee reply expressing appreciation of the provincial committee’s gesture in forwarding the donation for expenditure in the town. After a discussion on tho making of clothing, as suggested in the letter, it was decided to ask for further particulars as to tlie types of garment required and the most suitable materials. Mesdames I Johnston, H. P. Horne and the secretary were appointed to deal with the matter on receipt of a reply. The Woodville Horticultural and Industrial Society forwarded a donation of £lO. this sum representing half the proceeds of the recent autumn show which had been promised to the Red Cross Society-. Mrs James asked to be relieved of the position of organiser of the ladies’ class examinations and her request was acceded to; Mrs Nixon was appointed in her stead. Mr Williams reported that he and Mesdames James and Johnston had represented the Woodville branch at the provincial committee meeting held recently in Waipukurau. As Woodville belonged to the Manawatu centre they had been uncertain as to the reason for the reI quest for their attendance at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. They had been informed, however, that for the purposes of the forthcoming appeal Woodville came into tho Hawke’s Bay areas, hut remained affiliated with the Alanawatu for all other matters.
