As a war measure, Canada opened navigation on the St.-Lawrence River for 1940 many weeks earlier than usual. Ice breakers commenced breaking up the 20-inch thick ice on the stretch between Montreal and Quebec on February 26, the earliest known date in history, and as a result shipping to the United Kingdom and to Allied ports was greatly accelerated.
