STRONGER NAVY.
ADVISED BY ADMIRAL. Received Anvil 16, 10.40 n.m. WASHINGTON, April 10. Admiral Stark told the Senate Naval Affairs Committee that developments of the European war make it advisable to increase the lighting strength of the United States Navy by 25 per cent. He declared that the Vinson Bill, expanding the tonnage by 11 per cent, was acceptable, but 25 per cent was better to meet defence needs. He added be bad not sought that the navies in the Atlantic and Pacific be increased 25 per cent merely to permit maintenance of the 5—3 ratio with Japan. There was no reliable information about Japanese building since 1930, but it was probable the m’nimum, compared with the United States, was: America Japan Battleships _ 8 8 Aircraft carriers 2 4 Cruisers 6 8 Destroyers 39 32 Submarines 19 20 He added that accuracy could not be vouched for, but the proportion was unlikely to be less and may be much more.
