BATTERED NAVY.
NAZI LOSSES LISTED. i ADMIRAL SC B EER’S DAMAGE, j (British Official Wireless.) | RUGBY, April 14. < During last week Hitler’s invasion . of Norway resulted in casualties to the following ships of the German \ navy by the British Fleet in addition , to the Admiral Scheer and Karls- | rube:— i The battle-cruiser Scliarnliorst, badly < damaged by the Renown. Seven destroyers sunk, at Narvik, some of which bad been previously < damaged by British destroyers. i In addition, one cruiser was hit by 1 a bomb and another of the Koln class ( was hit by three bombs in Bergen i on Tuesday by the Royal Air Force ( and Fleet Air Ann aircraft. t The Norwegians claim that the : battlecruiser Gneisenau, the 10 000 ton cruiser Bluelier and the 6000-ton i cruiser Emden were sunk at Horten, s A naval expert considers that if the s Admiral Sclieor is still afloat it may l be assumed she is so badly damaged that she will be out of the' war for a £ very long time, states a Press Associa- c tion message from London. The dis- o advantages of the “pocket” battle- t ships, in which defensive armament s
was sacrificed to offensive power, were shown when the Admiral Sclicer’s sister ship the Graf Spee was battered by British guns of a smaller calibre. The Admiralty says the Admiral Scheer was possibly hit by more than one torpedo and the Admiralty never over-estimates its successes. Therefore, the phrase “successfully attacked” is significant.
