Toll of Fires. “A heavy toll with disastrous consequences is still being taken of vegetation as the result of carelessness, vandalism, and the wrongful use of fire,” says the annual report of the Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand.. “The society, together with many other organisations and Government departments, has endeavoured to lessen the fire menace. The law on the matter and its enforcement is, however, lamentably weak.” Waikanae Bridge Accidents?* No fewer than six serious accidents have occurred on the Waikanae bridge between Waikanae and Paraparaumu during the last two and a half years, says the Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. Laurenson) in a statement to tlie Press. All the accidents were collisions between motor vehicles. Over a year ago it was noticed that motorists were apparently failing to realise that this was a one-way bridge. On tlie suggestion of the Transport Department, therefore,' the Automobile Association erected conspicuous signs drawing attention to this fact. Despite this signposting, however, accidents are still happening. Motorists apparently do not yet realise that the Waikanae bridge _is too narrow for passing other vehicles.
