CONSUMPTION OF MARGARINE
WOMEN’S CONCERN. Concern over the increasing consumption of margarine in the Dominion was expressed by the actingchairman of the Manawatu branch of tlie National Council of Women (Mrs J. Harris) at yesterday’s meeting. She contended this was a matter for serious consideration as it concerned the future of the dairying industry in New Zealand and must reflect on the economic and social condition of not only the women in the country but the town women as well. At a rough estimate, Mrs Harris said, women held 85 per cent, of the purchasing power in their hands and they should he made aware of the menace of the rivalry of margarine over butter and what it might mean. The fact that there was now more than one factory for margarine in the Dominion indicated that sales were increasing to an alarming extent. Would the women of New Zealand think of the repercussions and count the cost? Mrs Harris asked. They mu-t get at the root of the trouble and find out why butter is so expensive. Women must take a more vital interest in matters that concerned them so deeply. Public opinion nnlst lie roused and the women could do much towards rousing it.
