EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 13, 1910. The sixth Manawatu Stakes race of £SOO had been won bv Mr Highden s Polymorphous, ridden by A. Oliver. Mr R. W. Paterson’s Penates was second. There were 23 newspapers, daily or less frequently, published in New Zealand. . . The death had occurred of Sergeant Maguire who had been mortally wounded through being shot four days previously when searching for Joseph Powelka. From Reefton it was reported that a terrible mine accident had occurred. Two mon were blown to pieces when they fired a row of holes.
