PERSONAL.
The appointment of Mr Toyokichi Fukuma as Consul-General of Japan at Wellington lias been gazetted. Mr G. A. Lewin, Dunedin; M. J. W. Hoenan, Wellington; Mr C. L. Grange, Auckland; Mr H. M. Christie, Waipuivurau; and Mr E. Hitchcock, Christchurch, have been appointed members of the Local Government Loans Hoard for one year from April 1. At a meeting of the Poll angina County Council, the chairman (Cr. S. J. Stralian) extended a welcome to Mill. B. Clapham, who had been elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Cr. J. T. Mongomerv. He stated that Mr Clapham was wellknown in the district and would make an excellent councillor Flying Officer E. W. Barnett, of Halcombe, a member of the Air Force instructional staff at Bell Block, and a son of Dr and Mrs E. C. Barnett, of Palmerston North, is making a good recovery from acute appendicitis, for which he is being treated at a private hospital in New Plymouth. It is expected that lie will be able to leave the hospital shortly. A gathering of theatre managers representing J. C. Williamson’s, Ltd., New Zealand Theatres, Ltd., and Eul-ler-Hayward, Ltd., yesterday, attended a conference in Palmerston North presided over by Mr H. J. Kerrklge, comanaging director of, Theatre Management, Ltd. Among those present were Messrs W. M. Maxwell, T L Craigie, A. C. Davis, junr. (Palmerston North), C. Ashford (Wanganui), >V. Tnit (Wanganui), A. Tong (Hastings), N. Thacker (Hastings), W Reid (Napier), P. Quinn (Napier), A. Grant (Masterton), H. Fry (Dannevirke) S Cottier (Pahiatua), C. Smith Dannevirke), C. Brittenden (Stratford), and J. Horton (Hawera).
