SPECIAL PREVIEW.
THEATRE MANAGERS’ CONFERENCE. Between twenty and thirty i>iclure theatre managers, of Theatre Alanagement, Ltd., from Hawke’s Bay, the Manawatu and AVairarapa, yesterday afternoon, attended a specially arranged picture preview at the Alayfair Theatre. The two main pictures screened were Metro-Goldwyn-Alayer’s “Another Thill Alan” and Paramount’s “The Great Victor Herbert.” The first-named picture stars William Powell in tlie role of the intrepid detective and AJyrna Loy as his capable wife. At the request of a wealthy colonel, played by C. Aubrey Smith, William Powell is engaged to protect tlie colonel who has had his Hfe threatened by an ex-convict. The story then becomes centred around tho murder of the colonel, which in its turn brings about the killing of the fiance, the colonel’s daughter. As the story progresses the mystery appears to be less unfathomable; but it is the ingenuity of the star detective which finally uncovers the workings of an extensive plot for the obtaining of large sums of money left by the colonel. Included in the superb (gist in “The Great Victor Herbert” is Paramount’s new sensational singing “discovery,” Alary Murray. Othei leading stars in this magnificent musical film are Allan Jones and Walter Connolly. The picture is based on the life story of Victor Herbert, a great musical conductor and operatic producer, and the leading players in his magnificent presentations.
