PRESIDENT EXPELLED.

MIRAMAR LABOUR BRANCH

The expulsion l»v the Miramar branch of the Labour Party of its president. Mr D. M. Martin, and the resignation from the Kilbirnie branch of three of its members, after a motion for their expulsion had been tabled, is reported in this week’s .issue of the official journal of the New Zealand Labour Party. Air Martin was the delegate of the Miramar branch to the annual conference and is stated to have been expelled for speaking and voting agai.nst the Government’s war policy in defiance of the decision of the branch supporting that policy. The branch refused to allow Mr Martin to tender his resignation, deciding by an overwhelming majority to expel him outright, says the Labour Standard. Three women members, including Mrs Martin, tendered their resignations in sympathy. The three members of the Kilbirnie branch who resigned were Messrs J. Traskcr, A\. G. Bishop and F. AI. Earle. A motion was placed l>efore the members that Air F. AI. Earle and any other members who were also members of the Peace and Anti-Conscription Council which had been declared a political organisation as the result of a decision by the Easter conference, should be expelled from the party. An amendment was then moved that any 6iich members should be given an opportunity of tendering their resignations during the meeting, and this was carried. Afessrs Tasker, Bishop and Earle thereupon signified their intention of resigning. Among the speakers at the meeting of the Kilbirnie branch was the Alinistor of Pub'ic AVorks CHon. R. Semple). He described the Peace and AntiCJonscrintion Council ns “a bogus organisation which was raising a bogey which did not gxist.” Tie Labour journal states that the Wellington North branch, at its meeting on April 2. also began a “house cleaning,” but because of the refusal of a number of members of the Peace and Anti-Conscription Council to leave -wlie.n requested to do so. the meeting ing was immediately adjourned.
