THIRTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 11, 1910. Sir George Reed said at the launching of the Australian destroyer Yarra that the world’s desire for peace had never been greater, but it was strange that the stronger the statesmen’s professions of peace were, the more extravagant and mad became the pace of naval preparations. At a meeting of Cabinet it was decided to expend £60,000 on new rolling stock for the New Zealand railways. For the workshops £BOOO was to be spent. Cabinet also agreed to spend £49,000 on military equipment. During the intensive search for Joseph Powelka in Palmerston North Mr Al. Qnirke. of Pahiatua, was shot in the forehead and later died. Powelka was seen later making towards Kimbolton. The police had increased the reward from £5O-to £lOO for the person who could give information that would lead to his arrest.
