NARROW ESCAPE
SINKING OF DREDGE. WORKMEN’S PREDICAMENT Rer Press Association. GISBORNE, April 10 The scuttling of the Harbour Board s old dredge Korua off Kick s Head yesterday afternoon was attended by the narrow escape of two men George Hamilton and Douglas Edwards. 1 hey had been left aboard to fire the charge which was to blow holes m the hull, a dinghy having been attached to the stern of the dredge to enable them to got away almost immediately after the charge hod been fired. However, the dredge tilted rapidly and lifted the dinghy into the air. Air Edwards promptly dived into the water, but Air Hamilton was somewhat less agile, and as lie scrambled over the side of the dredge the vessel sank like a stone. AVlien the dredge went under Mr Hamilton sank, top, but soon bqbbed to the surface again, and he and Air Edwards were promptly rescued by the attendant launch, which quickly got under way when the men’s predicament was seen.
