LOCAL BODIES’ VIEWS. For Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 9. Local bodies were recently asked by the New Zealand Defence League to express an opinion on the desirability ot a system of universal compulsory national service. The result was:— Letters sent, 317; replies received, 224; opinion declined 89; in favour, with or without reservation, 103; think it should be left to the Government, 30; in opposition, 2. Of the 103 favourable replies received 40 were in favour as expressing the opinion of individual councillors and 63 were in favour as bodies.
