WOOL VALUES.

SECOND CHRISTCHURCH SALE. NORTHERN LEVELS HELD. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 31. Values at the second Christchurch wool sale of this season held to-day were down for all wools from lid to 2id on rates ruling at' the Christchurch December fixture. A substantial decrease in prices was expected, particularly for finer wools, which form the main part of the Canterbury offering, but the decline was worse than bad been expected. Growers met the market fairly well, and about 75 per cent, of the offering of 30,090 bales was cleared. Buying again came mainly from the Continent, but on finer grades local mills operated almost to the exclusion t?f other buyers. Bradford bought sparingly throughout the day. There were a few Japanese orders in the market, hut no great competition came from that quarter. Competition was quiet all day and only seldom was any animation shown. Continental and Bradford limits appeared to be rigidly set, and as the offering was heavy in face of a restricted demand the sale was patchy. Fine halfbreds were back by 2d to 2|cf on December, Merinos by 2d, strong halfbreds by 2d and three-quarterbreds and crossbreds by llcl. The demand for lower wools was relatively better than for fine descriptions, and crossbreds and three-quarterbreds were fully up to recent North Island rates, if liot a shade better. Top price was 18§d for four bales of Corriedale ewe on account of Ensor Bros., Lammermoor. Halfbrcd made to 18id for 16 bales on a-ccount of E. S. Baxter, Peel View, Ruapunau. Merino more to 18d for 16 bales of ewe on account of the estate of D. Rutherford, Leslie Hills. Following is the official report of the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association: —The second Christchurch wool sale of the 1937-38 season was held to-day, when 30,090 bales were submitted at auction to a full bench of buvers. The bulk of the best Canterbury ewe clips was offered at this sale. The selection was a good one, but the condition of many of the clips was disapnointing. Owing to broken weather during the shearing a large nrnportion of the offering was moie or less yolk-stained, and there were far fewer reallv showy wools than is usual at this 6nle. Competition wa.s fairly general and well-sustained, hut came mainly from the Continent and Bradford. Local mills were useful competitors on super lots -in three-quarterbreds and crossbreds. Recent North Island prices were maintained, but finer clips were irregular ’and showed a considerable decline on December rates. Growers met the market fairly well, about 75 per cent, of the offering being disposed of at auction. Following is the range of values:
