ENTRIES COMPARED.
SHEEP CLASSES POPULAR. ROMNEYS AND SOUTHDOWNS. In the competitions the entries total 839 as against 358 for the Show a year ago, and in the cattle division there are 268 in comparison with 374 for the 1937 fixture. In the sheep pens the Romney section have risen from 195 entries last year to 210 this year and the Southdowns show an increase also from 277 to 290. The sheep entries total 771 this year as against 758 last year. The p!g classes, strong nevertheless in quality, have declined from 150 entries last year to 139 for this year, and the total stock entries are 151/ as against 1640 for the fixture a year ago. The home industries entries total 5J2 this year by comparison with /02 last year. . ~ The grand total of entries tor the current Show is 2117, and the corresponding total a year ago was 2342. The following are the detailed figures showing the numbers of entries in. the respective classes (last year’s figures being in parentheses): —Competitions, 170 (170); horses and ponies, 134 (156); draught horses, 35 (32); total, 339 (358).'. ~ . , Cattle.—Fat 41 (34); Herefords, 6 (7); Ayrshires, 19 (16); Jerseys 4o (156); Friesians, 8 (18); Milking Shorthorns, 22 (21); Red Polls 19 (26); special and grades, 108 (96); total, 268 (374). Sheep.—Romneys, open, 210 (195); Romneys (natural condition). 56 (—); Southdowns (open) 134 (130 D Southdowns (natural condition). 156 (144); Ryelands, 37 (23); Lincolns, 6 (—): fat sheep, 48 (93); fat lambs. 64 (93); killing and export, 52 (80); total, 771 (758). Pigs.—l 39 (150). Stock total. 1517 (1640). Home industries.—Honey 10 (7) , cookery, 218 (243); preserves, 81 (119) • ladies’ needlework. 228 (22o); juvenile needlework, 46 (82); Women’s Institute competitions, 17 (26); total. 600 (702). Grand total. 2117, (2342). The president of the A. and r. Association (Mr N. J. Short), in an interview with the “Standard, commented on the Show in general, and said that although the entries were not as large as he would have liked, they exceeded expectations. Naturally the weather conditions had effected the entries as far as numbers were concerned, and although there was a drop in the fat sheep classes the deficiencies were made up in the stud Romney and Southdown classes. Mr •Short spoke highly of the quality of the entries in the fat beef sections, and made special mention of Mr T. A. Duncan’s splendid exhibit of bullocks. Indications were that the Show wopld prove a popular and most suc-
cessful fixture.
