TRAIN STRIKES LORRY. 7.■ ’ ■ DRIVER’S LUCKY ESCAPE. Driven by Mr G. H. Blanche, a well-borer, of Monrad Street, Palmerston North, who liad a remarkable escape from injury, a ; one-ton truck which was towing a trailer was struckby a goods train at 11.30 a.m. to-day oil the level crossing by the Rangiotu bridge. Mr Blanche, who was-en route to Glen Oroua, had turned off the i almerston Noitli-Foxton main highway by the bridge in order to cross the railway line, when a goods train pioceeding to Foxton struck the front of his lorry, smashing in the engine. Fortunately, the impact slewed the vehicle off the track and, with Mi Blanche still in the chb, which was also damaged, the truck was dragged over a chain towards the goods shed before the train pulled up. Though the vehicle was extremely damaged, Mr Blanche emerged from the wrecked part of the vehicle without even a cut’.
