Hart and McLeod were the opening bats, the former securing 22 runs, while his partner was bowled by Dewe before he was ■ able to score. The next bat was W. H. Smith, who kept his wickets intact until he had knocked up the best scofc of the afternoon, Dewe bowling him at 78. Bennett contributed 35 runs to the aggregate score of 219, while of the other batsmen' the scores of Liddell (19), Drube (13), and A. C. Buist (17) were the best performances. James Dewe took 3 for 55, having accounted for Liddell in addition to his other achievements. S. Bramwell took 3 for 49, the credit for ' the dismissals of Bennett, Monteith, and Barltrop being attributed to his bowling. In reply Old Boys ‘ made a poor showing and at stumps had lost five wickets’ for 69. Watson and Bramwell opened, but the partnership resulted in
only 16 runs, both being accounted for by Barltrop. James Dewe (21) and Brock (10) wore both bowled by W. H. Smith. Details: — . PUBLIC SERVICE. First innings.
