BOWLING

MANAWATU AT HOME. Eleven visiting rinks were accommodated at the Manawatu Club’s greens on Saturday, when enjoyable play eventuated. The gathering took the place of the usual arrangements for opening day this season, when the club was faced with the prospect of nearly 60 new members many of whom had played very little or not at all before. When extending a welcome to the visitors on Saturday, the president (Mr H. G. Mills) explained that at the opening of the season the club had an increase in membership from 40 to 100, and many of the new members had never played bowls before. This occasion would provide new members with their first game against sister clubs, and all hoped, that the visitors would return for other games. This was an interesting season so far as bowlers were concerned in the Manawatu, Mr Mills continued, for there had been visits by the South Canterbury and British touring parties. Although the British bowlers had not been quite so proficient as the New Zealanders, they had certainly shown an example of sportsmanship. They were great sportsmen and knew how to win or lose a game. The speaker, in conclusion, extended a particular welcome to a rink from the Hokowhitu Club. The results were as follow: Manawatu.—A. Whitehead, Cherry, Oxenham, Bedtson (skip) 29 v. Oroua : Bridge, Pagan, Hamilton, Hausmann (skip) 14. Manawatu; W. Whitehead, Harvey, Blake, Tantrum (skip) 21 v.
