40,000 ITALIANS.
LEAVE SOON FOR SPAIN.
ROME, Jan. 21
General Franco, leader of the Spanish rebels, is reported to have informed Signor Mussolini that he is confident of winning the civil war with an all-Spanish army. Signor Mussolini is sceptical, and officials in Rome admit that 40.000 Italians may soon take the offensive at some point other than Teruel. It is not denied in official circles that Italy is selling arms to the Spanish rebels, “with, possibly, a few aeroplanes.” Nor is it concealed that shipments of iron ore are reaching Italy from ports under Franco’s control. In the early days of the Spanish war, newsreels gave little prominence to the presence of Italian troops in Spain, but now there are many closeup pictures, particularly when soldiers are reviewed or decorated by Franco.
