REQUESTS TO MINISTER
NEW PLYMOUTH- VISIT. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 28. The Minister of Railways and Industries and Commerce (Hon. D. G. Sullivan), who was accompanied by the Attorney-General (Hon. H. G. R Mason) and Mr G. H. Mackley (General Manager of Railways), had a number of requests placed before him today. Deputations asked him to undertake as a national work the prevention of erosion by the sea which is damaging private property and threatening the main railway line; to provide improved railway yard facilities at New Plymouth ; and to explain the arrangement between the Railway Department and petrol companies as a result of which, because petrol from all companies but one is railed from Wellington, Taranaki consumers are paying twopence a gallon more than Wellington. Mr Sullivan said the contract with the oil companies would expire this year, and it was open to Taranaki people to persuade all the companies to import in bulk through New Plymouth. The Minister was so impressed with the danger of the erosion that it is understood he decided to have a protecting wall erected.
