MASTER CYKLON’S CUP.

THE PAHIATUA MEETING. SURPRISE IN NURSERY. (By “Spectator.”) Witli a good attendance, the Paliiatua Racing Club’s annual meeting opened in excellent weather yesterday. The Cup was won well by Master Cyklon, and the open seven furlongs race, the concluding event, by ' Passion Fruit from a four-horse field. Twenty Grand sprang a surprise in annexing the nursery. There was very interesting racing, and the track was in first-class order. The totalisator handled. £9228 10s, compared with £8920 10s for the first day last year, an increase of £3OB. Subsequent to the running of the Pahiatua Cup, the president of the club (Mr D. Kelly) presented to the horse’s owner, Mrs A. M. Goodman, the canteen of cutlery donated by Mr J. L. Bennett, of Palmerston North, as a trophy for the race. He commented that she was the first lady owner to win the Cup race, and as he understood that she intended to take Master Cyklon further afield, he wished her every success. Cheers were given for the trainer (C. .T. Stowe, of Hastings) and the rider (B. H. Morris). Some years ago Stowe produced the winner of the Pahiatua Cup in Cuddle, whom he was then training. Royal Portrait looked like a certainty beaten in the first race, in which Royal Picture horses filled the first two places. At the distance, when leading, he broke down in a tendon, and his rider, realising that something had happened, eased him slightly on the post. Royal Portrait pulled up badlv lame GAY ARTIST IMPROVES. Lying nicely in fourth position nearly all the way. Gay Artist, who had twice been placed third in her previous starts at Tauherinikau, finished strongly on the fence to snatch the verdict by a short head from Royal Portrait in the maiden event.

Jumping out smartly, Royal Portrait led all the way, and looked a winner until Gay Artist closed on him in the last few strides. Sunder, who had run up to attend the pacemaker half a mile from home, hung on for third place, with Quexona fourth, followed by Hastings West. The favourite, Rowana, got a bad passage on the fence and dropped back towards the rear of the field half a mile from home, but came again to finish well. Rolling Home was left at the start and, after his effort to recover the leeway, was stopping badly at the end. MEA MEA PREVAILS.

Striking conditions to his liking, the Lackham gelding Mea Mea, who had been a winner at the Wairarapa meeting, annexed the Konini Hack Handicap nicely. Knightsbridge led from the barrier, until they were into the straight, but weakened into fifth place. Le Toquet was a little slow away, and was unlucky, as he did not have the best of runs, but he finished solidly. Merrvman, who appeared to be a trifle sore, ran a very creditable race into third place, the last furlong finding him out; but he will improve. Nereus made a fast run half a furlong from home, but did not go on with it. State Bank, having his first run for 18 months, did not flatter his supporters. HIGHWEIGHT TO PARRY. Finishing with a fast run on the inner, the favourite, Parry, got up in time to win the Ballalice Highweight by half a length from Earl Colossus who, after being apparently well beaten. came again on the post. Earl Colossus made a big effort to win all the way, and just failed. Twilight Song ranged up alongside the pacemaker, turning for home, but weakened into fourth place. Buster Brown, winner of the Hack Cup at Ashhurst, was never very prominent and finished fifth. Camilla Horn was just beaten into third place by a short head, and may be accounted a bit unlucky. Bing Boy lost a lot of ground going out of the straight, twice receiving a check in the early running. He made a run on the outside in the straight and momentarily threatened danger, but his earlier efforts then told on him. THE CUP RACE. *

With diffierent tactics adopted in the Pahialua Cup, Master Cyklon, who had failod to fill a place in the Ashhurst Cup, recorded an improved performance to score nicely. Pulling hard, Lucullus Lad ■went to the front immediately the tapes lifted, and hold on as pacemaker until well into the straight, where it did not appear that he would stay on, as he swung wide, but he ran on in determined fashion after being headed by Master Cyklon. Lying third turning into the straight, the latter was taken through vigorously by B. H. Morris. Helen Ford, who finished only half a head behind Lucullus Lad, made a fairly good showing all the way. Limbohiii moved up quickly on the rails just before the turn for homo, but had not raced since October, and coukl not see it out. Terry, though just beaten by a nose in the Ashhurst Cup, could make little impression on the field when he tried to make a run ueariug the finish. Pulceko ran a fair race into fourth place, with Pladie, Hunting Queen, and Libohm next. TWENTY GRAND’S SUCCESS. Twenty Grand, after being unplaced in several previous stnrts, brought off a surprise in winning the Nursery Handicap to pay a nice dividend. By Koomeela (a brother of Amounis) the winner, from last position entering tho straight, came through with a fast run on the inside to get tlm decision by half a length. Brazil, the Pombol-Episode colt from Awapuni, having his first start, galloped greenly, or he may have won. He will imiprove with experience. Hunter’s Eve, who dwelt at the start and was last away, ran up on the rails to attend the pacemaker, Jeanne, at the turn for home, but eventually finished fourth. Segra faded out after showing early pace, as did Lady Molfort, but the early leader, Jeanne, was beaten by a neck only into third place. LONG OVERDUE WIN.

Naughty Marietta, who had not won a race since her first at the Woodville meeting ten months ago, but who had been very unlucky at the recent Stratford meeting, scored an overdue win in the Hamua Hack Handicap, when she finished with a great run on the outside to cut down the leaders 50 yards from the post.

Impersonator made the pace until well into the straight, but was' eventually beaten back into a poor fourth, lengths behind the third horse Maestro, who finished 1 only a short head behind Seyfried, but ran a disappointing race after having every chance. Agog, after showing up early, drifted back to last approaching the turn for home, where Naughty Marietta was lying in behind Impersonator and Seyfried. FAVOURITE GETS HOME.

Installed a firm favourite for the Makuri Hack Handicap, Ruling Spi duly carried his suporters through to give the Otaki stable its second success of the day. Ruling Spi was well back in the early running, ■ and actually sixth turning

into the straight, but finished with a slashing run to head off the field a short distance from the post. Joe Louis made a very determined late challenge, and just failed to get up to the winner. Jewish Lad, who was third, showed that he is an improving horse. Rhodesian, pacemaker into the straight, coukl not see out the distance, and finished fourth, followed by Diamond Cutter, who appeared to be pocketed on the rails after going well in third place turning into the straight. PASSION FRUIT’S SUCCESS. Evenly supported with Kahikatoa for the last event, Passion Fruit, finished with great dash to win easily by three lengths. Passion Fruit was first to begin, but Kahikatoa ran into the lead after two furlongs had been covered. He turned for home from Mister Quex,' Pakanui and Passion Fruit, but, once in line for the post, Passion Fruit soon came through to overhaul the leader. Pakanui failed in an attempt to get through on the fence, and finished five lengths behind Kahikatoa. RACING IN DETAIL. MAIDEN RACE, of £80; second £lO and third £5. Six and a quarter furlongs.
