BEGGARS’ HORSES.
If only wishes were horses Then surely beggars would ride, And I’d mount on a milk-white palfrey While you should ride at my side, Into the gold of the sunset, Or the rose petal hues of the morn, Through Sherwood glades in the twilight With Robin Hood winding his horn; And the world should be festive with ■ laughter And the stars 'would sparkle with fun, 1 If only my wishes were granted, Quickly fulfilled one by one. Alas, I must stay in this morning Watching the dear day go by, Why should I bother with lessons? Why o’er French verbs must I sigh ? When the ferns are forlornly unfolding • . ' ■ Without me to see their deep shades, And the shadows of sunbeams are
sliding Within all my favourite glades, With equations t struggle and ponder, (Forget that the sky is so blue. Forget that you’re pining to wander, Remember the work you’ve to do), But oil 1 how my heart is just aching To roam in this blue-golden day, To fling to the winds all my lessons, To rebel—and steal swiftly away.
