INCREASE IN STERLING EXCHANGE NOTE ISSUE LOWER. The -weekly statement of assets and liabilities of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as at the close of business on Monday, January 24, js as follows: — LIABILITIES.

Proportion of reserve (No. 7 less No. 5) to notes and other demand liabilities 70.789 per cent., compared with 69.963 per cent, on January 17. . , The note issue continues at a high level, despite the natural -decrease since the high point of Christmas. Since January 17 the note issue has decreased by £236,546, and now stands at £14,295.959. which is £l,227.567 above the figure for January 25, 1937. State deposits show a decrease of_ £17,420, the total now being £3,022,696. Iho trading banks’ reserve balances total £10,308.066 an increase of £681,255. Other demand liabilities stand at £641,541, a decrease of £9036. Other liabilities at £193,175 show an increase of £1458. London fund* show a further increase of £526,087, the sterling exchange total now standing at £17,209,189. Gold remains unchanged at £2,801.791. Subsidiary coin totals £218,393, an increase of £5lO. Advances to the Primary Products Marketing Department total £6,093,308, a decrease of £127.835. Advances to the State for other purposes stand unchanged at £900.000. . i , Investments remain unchanged at £2,658,325. Other assets total £80,432, an increase of £20,950. The statement balances at £29,961,438, an increase of £419,711.
